Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Caribou ME
523 AM EST Thu Nov 21 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure approaches from the southwest today, crosses the
region late Friday into Saturday, then moves east of the region
Sunday. High pressure builds toward the region from the west
Monday.
&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
Low pressure lifts from the Mid-Atlantic coast to southern New
England today. The supporting upper low across the Mid-Atlantic
region then captures the surface low tonight. The surface low
wraps westward across southern New England tonight, eventually
stacking beneath the upper low. With increasing moisture,
isolated rain showers will begin to develop this morning with
scattered showers this afternoon. Otherwise, skies will remain
cloudy/mostly cloudy today. Expect increasing Atlantic moisture
tonight. Areas of rain will develop across the forecast area
tonight. The pressure gradient between the low and high
pressure near Labrador will support gusty northeast/east winds
later today through tonight with gusts of 25 to 30 mph expected.
High temperatures today will range from the lower to mid 40s
north, to the mid to upper 40s Downeast. Low temperatures
tonight will range from the upper 30s to around 40 north, to the
lower 40s Downeast.
&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
Vertically stacked low pressure will pinwheel across eastern
Pennsylvania during Friday. Spokes of moisture will be lifting
northward across northern New England through Friday afternoon. Will
have likley to categorical pops across the entire forecast area
during Friday. That being said, high pressure will remain
across Labrador with northeast flow. That may result in
precipitation being slower to move into northeast portions of
the forecast area. Highs Friday afternoon will be in the low 40s
across the north and mid 40s for the Bangor region and
Downeast. Friday night and Saturday, the low will gradually move
east and off the coast of NJ, and then toward the Canadian
Maritime provinces by later Saturday afternoon. As the low lifts
northeast expect precipitation to continue during Saturday,
although there still is uncertainty with regard to the extent of
the heavier precipitation. Precipitation will be mainly in the
form of rain, then possibly begin to transition to, or mix with
snow across the North Maine Woods and higher terrain later
Saturday afternoon. Trimmed a few degrees off the NBM numbers
for Saturday`s highs. Generally expect upper 30s to around 40
north and low to mid 40s across the remainder of the region.
&&

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
Surface/upper level low pressure continues to slowly exit east
through the Canadian Maritimes Saturday night through Sunday.
As colder air wraps into the region, expect rain to change to
snow across the North Maine Woods and higher terrain Saturday
night. Some snow accumulation is possible there during Saturday
night. Expect mainly cloudy skies with lingering snow or rain
across the north tapering to scattered showers later Sunday
morning and afternoon. Weak ridging builds in for Sunday night
and Monday with drier conditions. Another low pressure system
from the Great Lakes region approaches Monday night through
Tuesday, bringing the next chance for precipitation to the
region. Precipitation could linger into Wednesday but there is
a large degree of uncertainty this far out. Afternoon highs
through the period will be near or slightly above normal levels
for this time of year.
&&

.AVIATION /10Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
NEAR TERM: Generally MVFR ceilings today, with isolated to
scattered rain showers developing. MVFR/IFR tonight with rain
developing. Northeast winds 10 to 15 knots with gusts up to 25
knots today. Northeast/east winds 10 to 20 knots with gusts up
to around 25 knots tonight. Easterly low level wind shear
develops later this evening.

SHORT TERM:

Friday through Saturday...MVFR conditions expected, with
possible IFR at times. NE wind gusts up to 20 kt possible.

Saturday night...IFR possible in snow/rain, with MVFR/IFR for
KBGR/KBHB in rain.

Sunday...MVFR in snow/rain early, becoming VFR late. Gusty NW wind.

Sunday night and Monday...VFR. NW wind possible.
&&

.MARINE...
NEAR TERM: A Small Craft Advisory is in effect for all the
waters today through tonight. Isolated/scattered rain showers
today, then rain developing tonight.

SHORT TERM: SCA conditions are expected Friday through Sunday.
&&

.CAR WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES...
ME...None.
